Economic downturn 'could cause rise in accidents'
Nov 25 2008A number of motorists are risking their safety on UK roads as they bid to save money in the economic downturn, experts suggest.
The Institute of Advanced Motrists (IAM) revealed that people are increasingly sticking with their used cars and skimping on basic maintenance rather than applying for Car Loans to purchase new vehicles.
As a result, Alistair Darling's pre-budget report is a necessary catalyst to help kickstart the car market and thereby reduce the number of accidents, the group suggested.
"The increased safety features of newer, previously used vehicles are going to have a beneficial effect in terms of crash protection," said Neil Greig, director of the IAM Motoring Trust.
Last week the IAM issued a warning to secured car loans customers against the risks posed by the onset of winter road conditions.
Drivers should ensure they allow added time for their journeys and ensure they leave adequate stopping distance from the vehicle in front, the organisation advised.
