The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) is satisfied that targeted drink-drive campaigns are successful in improving road safety.
Unsecured Car Loans customers will no doubt be well aware of the increased police efforts to clamp down on offenders over the Christmas and new year period.
Between December 2008 and January 2009, officers netted more than 9,000 drivers who either failed or refused to take a breath test.
While the IAM claimed that this was still too many, director of research and policy at the organisation Neil Greig said the operations had succeeded in helping to make the roads safer for new and used car drivers.
"Targeted enforcement campaigns work, and it is encouraging to see these initiatives improve road safety for all road users," he commented.
Another leading safety organisation also expressed its disappointment at the number of people still risking their lives by taking to the road despite being over the legal limit.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents claimed that the latest figures showed a need for police to take year-round action to combat drink-driving.
