Toyota's green hybrid Prius car is more likely to be bought by older Car Finance customers, according to research.

Figures have also shown cars such as the NISSAN Micra, traditionally associated with older drivers and car loan customers, are driven by people with an average age of 35.

The statisitcs, compiled by Tescocompare.com, also revealed Porsches are more likely to be driven by people about to hit 40.

Paul Baxter of Tescocompare.com said: "This research has thrown up some surprising results with cars we think are normally owned by the young having a surprisingly high typical age and visa versa."

Among cars driven by younger drivers is the CITROEN Saxo, which the research says is driven by people with an average age of 27.

Drivers buying the Prius, a car using a fuel engine and electric motor combination, are typically aged around 50, the stats say.

Last month TOYOTA revealed the Prius had sold more than one million models worldwide since it arrived in 1997.ADNFCR-1366-ID-18630567-ADNFCR
