The current recession could spell good news for the environment as frugal drivers continue to plump for more efficient vehicle choices.
Many unsecured Car Loans customers are now looking to swap their older cars for newer and more efficient models to help beat the credit crunch.
As well as enabling drivers to make significant savings on their motoring costs, this has also seen an "unprecedented" change in the UK car market.
The average carbon dioxide emissions of new cars are now at their lowest levels as manufacturers compete to offer the greenest and most fuel efficient models.
But while the car industry is taking the credit, car loans customers have also played their part in bringing about the change, said Clean Green Cars publisher Jay Nagley.
"It is true that cars are getting steadily more efficient, but the recession is having a much bigger impact by making people choose smaller, more economical models," he suggested.
The magazine also highlighted MINI as offering the lowest carbon emission vehicles on the market, which is likely to come as a boost to the manufacturer as it prepares to unveil its new One Clubman in March.
