Tougher penalties for car loans customers
Nov 21 2008Secured Car Loans customers are to face tougher penalties for failing to obey the rules of the road under new proposals announced today.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick unveiled the plans, which are intended to help cut the number of deaths on UK roads each year.
These include more stringent rules to tackle drink drivers, with the Department of Transport keeping "an open mind" as to the possibility of lowering the legal alcohol limit.
Speeders will also face crackdowns, with those caught breaking the limit by more than 20mph facing six penalty points rather than three.
Mr Fitzpatrick said the announcement offered "a very clear message" to reckless drivers of new and used cars that they would be caught and punished accordingly if they ignored the rules of the road.
The proposals follow a report by the Transport Select Committee which expressed its disappointment at the government's progress in terms of cutting the number of deaths resulting from road accidents.
