Volkswagen boss scoops Man of the Year prize
Apr 22 2009The chairman of car manufacturer VOLKSWAGEN has been awarded the 2009 Man of the Year title by French motoring publication Le Journal de l'Automobile.
Martin Winterkorn was praised by the award's jury for the development and growth of Volkswagen over the past year, beating tough trading conditions to remain a top-selling manufacturer.
His success in ensuring Volkswagen has been the "only automaker to buck the economic crisis" made him an obvious choice for the prestigious award, the panel explained.
Despite the global economic downturn that has ravaged the car industry over the past year, Mr Winterkorn's firm has managed to meet its sales and profits targets and broken a number of records along the way.
Volkswagen's Golf was recently named World Car of the Year at the 2009 New York International Motor Show, demonstrating the company's success.
The Golf has also been the top-selling car in Europe over the past year, only to fall behind the FORD Fiesta in March.
