Mazda Releases Details of CX-5

Watch out Land Rover – Mazda is about to launch a compact 4x4 SUV model aimed directly at the Freelander.

The vehicle will be based on the Minagi concept car.  It will also be Mazda’s most economical and advanced model to date.  While no official pictures have been published yet, Mazda has revealed more information about the engine line-up.

The new Mazda will be powered by a range of SKYACTIV engines and gear boxes.  The body will be rigid yet lightweight.  In fact, Mazda boasts that their new car will become a class leader in terms of performance, economy and emissions.  The 2.2-litre diesel version, for example, will deliver 173bhp yet emit less than 120g/km of CO2.

To put it simply, the thinking behind SKYACTIV technology is to improve the internal combustion engine to levels unheard of before, rather than to add heavy (and expensive) electric engines and batteries.

Mazda has managed to make the new 2.2 engine 20% more fuel efficient than its predecessor, yet it delivers 50Nm more torque at lower engine revolutions.

The best seller in the new range is expected to be the diesel.  It is claimed to offer levels of smoothness and responsiveness hitherto only found in petrol engines.

The chassis of the CX-5 will be modular in design.  It will underpin a whole future range of Mazdas, including the new Mazda 6 saloon.

The MD of Mazda UK, Jeremy Thompson, said the CX-5 “would mark a significant step forward… the interior design will definitely match the exterior.”

Interested car loan buyers in the UK will have to wait a few months for the CX5 to appear on showroom floors.
