Japanese car manufacturer Mazda announced on Friday that it was recalling over 50 000 cars in the United States and 15 000 in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Canada. The reason for this drastic step is that spiders' webs were found in the air vents of a number of these vehicles. UK car finance buyers will no doubt be pleased that the UK has not been affected by this announcement at the moment.
All of the cars involved are Mazda 6 models from the 2009 and 2010 range.
The whole issue began when it was discovered that spiders could weave a web in a vent that is directly connected to the fuel tank. This could clog up the vent, blocking the free flow of air to and from the tank, which in turn could lead to pressure building up in the tank. Eventually this could lead to cracks, fuel leakages and fire danger.
Mazda spokesperson Jeremy Barnes said that no cases of fire, injuries or crashes have been reported yet by car finance buyers.
Twenty dealers, however, reported that they found spiderwebs in the fuel tank air vent. In all cases yellow sac spiders were involved. According to Barnes it was not clear why these spiders showed such a high preference for Mazdas. Strangely enough the phenomenon could also not be pinpointed to a specific geographic area.
"Perhaps yellow sac spiders like to go zoom-zoom?" he joked.
Any UK car finance buyers who find spiders' webs in the fuel tank air vents of their Mazdas are requested to report this to the company without delay.
