The long wait to find out exactly what the new B-class Mercedes would look like has finally come to an end: motoring journalists in Germany caught one of these cars totally undisguised – months before its official release.
From the pictures it is clear that Mercedes has given great attention to the design of the new car. The feature lines running along the doors are sharply contoured and the headlights, which will now include LEDs, have a much more streamlined look than before.
The model in the spy pictures has large twin-spoke alloy wheels. The 2.7m wheelbase is 30cm longer than that of a Volkswagen Golf, which of course means a much more spacious interior for passengers.
It will have a beneficial effect on ride quality as well. The innovative new multi-link suspension system at the rear will further improve ride comfort. As a matter of fact, the new B-class has been built on a completely new platform that will be used in a whole new range of compact Mercedes cars.
The B-class to be released in December will be the first of these. It will be followed by the new A-Class and later on by a crossover SUV with front wheel drive that will be positioned below the left-hand drive GLK.
Under the bonnet the new model will initially be available with a brand new 1.8-litre diesel and a 1.6-litre petrol engine. Both will also be used in the new C-class that will become available to interested UK car loan buyers next year.
