There were days, not so long ago, that a Mercedes was viewed as a refined car for an elderly gentleman or lady who did not need auto finance. A state-of-the-art Mercedes running solely on electric power was something nobody even dreamt of.
This, however, is exactly what Protean Electric and Boston Power have done: the two companies joined forces to produce lithium-ion batteries and in-wheel electric motors for the new BRABUS cars that are based on the E-Class Mercedes Benz.
They unveiled the high performance electric models at the Frankfurt Motor Show, which is currently under way in Germany.
The first model is a four-wheel drive fully electric car that is fitted with a brand new electric vehicle system that is able to deliver an astounding 320kW of power and 3,200Nm of torque from a 57kWh lithium-ion battery pack. What is even more amazing is that the car has a range of 217 miles (nearly 350km).
The second car in the range is the BRABUS sedan, based on the Mercedes E220 CDI. It is powered by a hybrid system consisting of an internal combustion engine and Protean in-wheel electric motors. This one can accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and fuel economy is 30% better than the non-hybrid model.
To add to the woes of competitors, the BRABUS 4-wheel drive Full Electric vehicle will be the first ever to be fitted with Boston Power’s “Swing Medley” – a liquid cooling system providing the battery pack with 50% more usable energy.
