Car manufacturer MERCEDES has launched a new model into the luxury car market in a move that could increase the number of luxury used cars available.
The firm has unveiled the 2009 S Class, after the market launch of the W 221 model series four years ago.
"A world-first combination of state-of-the-art assistance and protection systems is available for the 2009 S-Class," the company states.
The new technology enables the car to "see" and "feel", the company says, as well as to respond "instinctively" to detected dangers and to act "on its own initiative" in order to avoid accidents.
"With this concept, the S-Class not only protects its own occupants but also plays a key role in enhancing safety for other motorists," said Dr Thomas Weber, who is responsible for corporate research and the development of MERCEDES-BENZ cars.
People planning to upgrade to the new model could trade in their old vehicles, resulting in a growth in the availability of luxury used cars.
A growing number of people are looking to the used car market in an effort to make their money go further during the recession, with many hoping to pick up a bargain rather than fork out the full price for a new car.
