The latest spy shots of the Mercedes SL published by the motoring press provide a lot more detail than previous ones. The pictures show a car with much less camouflage and we can get a clearer picture of what the SL will look like once it appears on showroom floors.
With only a patch of black tape here and there to conceal the car's shape, it now becomes clear the SL has a low, wide front obviously inspired by the SLS and the CLS four-door. Beneath the masking tape one can clearly see the reshaped headlamps with their wide LED running lights.
The SL is reportedly aimed to compete with British rivals such as the Jaguar XK and the Aston Martin Vantage Roadster. The entry level model will have a 3.5-litre V6 engine delivering 305bhp. AMG versions will be fitted with the brand new Mercedes V8 twin-turbo engine of 5.5 litres pushing out 450bhp, which we already saw in the CL.
The SL 500 will be fitted with 4.6-litre engine which will offer much better fuel economy while still delivering strong performance. It might also be fitted with the same technology Mercedes uses in the SLK55 AMG, which shuts down cylinders when they are not required and activate them again in a split second when they are needed.
The car will be manufactured using carbon fibre components and lightweight reinforced plastics, which will make it much lighter than its predecessor.
The new SL is expected to make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 2012, so it's perhaps time you start preparing your bank manager for an imminent car loan application.
