The Mercedes S-Class Plug-in Hybrid – Great expectations

Apr 15 2010 There is a lot of expectation built around the about to be introduced Mercedes S-Class Plug-in Hybrid in terms of its ability to achieve the 81mpg mark and that is good news for those advocating big cars. The scare a couple of years back was about big cars slowly making way for the small ones and it was up to Mercedes to demonstrate through its plug-in concept that bigger cars can also be fuel efficient without any compromise on efficiency or comfort.
This next generation S-Class will be using the latest V-6 direct injection engine with piezo injectors for precision and would also have a 60-hp motor running on electricity complementing it. When the car is run on electric-mode, it can reach speeds of 68mph and can cover up to a distance of 33kms. Needless to say, given the right pricing and backing of good car credit arrangements, this model too will have a lot of customer interest coming its way.
However, certain improvements still need to be made. One of them is the longer charging period of the batteries coupled with their low energy density. That makes such vehicles ideal for city driving and not for long distance highway use at the moment.
