The MG motoring brand ground to a halt eight years ago and ever since then it has battled to get going again. However, things are likely to change soon says Tony Williams, the company's design chief.
While we have not seen any significant announcements from the MG stable under Chinese control yet, Williams foresees a lot more coming to the United Kingdom in the near future.
He said: “There has never been so much investment in MG. The brand is central to the global ambitions of the parent company.”
The current MG6 will be joined by one new model next year. This will most probably be the B-segment MG3, despite the fact that MG has just released the C-segment MG5 in the Chinese market. Also in the pipeline is an MG crossover, loosely based on the MG3.
Williams is in charge of the design department for MG and its sister company Roewe. Both companies now belong to the Chinese company SAIC that purchased the intellectual property rights to the former Rover 75 and subsequently also bought MG.
In the domestic Chinese market, Roewe is the company's leading brand. MG will eventually lead SAIC's export charge. The MG6 is already available in the United Kingdom. The car is being put together at the Longbridge Rover plant. At present this is the only country in Europe where it is sold, although a number of cars are also being exported to developing markets, including South America.
Both brands are strong sellers in China because of their “Britishness.” Williams said: “This plays very well with Chinese customers.”
