UK car finance buyers can look forward to an MG 4x4 in the not so distant future. The company has announced plans to start building a crossover within the next 12 months, though it will unlikely grace UK showrooms before 2013.
The announcement follows hot on the heels of news that the MG-6 hatchback will be on sale in showrooms around the country from April. The company's revised model line-up now concentrates on cars with mass appeal, rather than specialised markets such as sports cars.
The MG-6 will be available to UK car finance buyers both in saloon and hatchback forms. The MG-3 was also recently announced by the company.
SAIC, the parent company of MG, is reported to favour a crossover four-wheel drive vehicle for the company's third model. This move could also provide new opportunities for MG's Chinese brand, Roewe. According to sales and marketing manager of MG, Guy Jones, the company will start tests on the new four-wheel drive vehicle in China next year.
"There will be at least three volume vehicles in our range before we build a sports car", he added.
The MG-6 will not be available in European markets before the second part of 2012. At this stage it will most likely also be available with a diesel engine. UK car finance buyers will be able to buy the MG-3 towards the end of next year.
Jones was not willing to confirm that the MG-3 will be assembled in Longbridge. At this stage production will most likely take place in China to keep the costs as low as possible.
