In a clear sign that electric cars are gaining rapid acceptance among auto loan buyers worldwide, Mitsubishi has announced it is expanding sales of its i-MiEV electric car to Costa Rica in Central America.
Initially the bulk of buyers will most likely come from the fleet market, government departments and electric companies.
The introduction of the i-MiEV into the local market forms part of an overall strategy by the Costa Rican Government to become the first "carbon offset country". Its goal is to reach a level of zero CO2 emissions by the year 2021, and the Government sees the introduction of electric vehicles as an important step in this direction. To encourage acceptance of electric cars by the general auto loan public, they will exempt these cars from custom duties.
The i-MiEV was originally launched to fleet customers in Japan during the summer of 2009. Since then the car has also been introduced to Hong Kong, Australia and 15 European countries, including Austria, Denmark, Belgium, France, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. It will soon also be available in the United States.
All this is only the beginning for the i-MiEV, it seems. Further expansion plans are on the way and requests have already been received to introduce the car to Turkey, Slovenia, Finland and Serbia. In all the countries where the car has been introduced so far, it has been well received by auto loan buyers.
