By now we have become used to hearing about a new electric car model to be released virtually on a weekly basis. Despite the fact that fewer than expected motorists are signing up for car loans on EVs, most manufacturers obviously believe that all-electric and electric cars are the future of the motoring industry.
The latest manufacturer to launch new electric models will be Kia, who is expected to use the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to launch two electric cars.
The Korean car manufacturer will showcase both the Kia Ray and the Kian Naimo at the show.
Both cars use a state-of-the-art lithium polymer battery pack. The Naimo also features what Kia refers to as the User Centred Driving Telematics. This consists of a glass cockpit interface that utilises a heads-up display instead of the usual gauge cluster to provide information on battery life, speed and more. It can also download applications to make driving and parking easier.
The Naimo is, in fact, the third electric car produced by Kia. It is powered by a synchronous motor fitted with a permanent magnet. This gives the car a maximum power output of 107bhp and maximum torque of 207lb-ft.
The 27kWh battery uses lithium-ion polymer technology and is fitted under the floor of the trunk.
The all-important driving range of the car is reported to be 124 miles/100km when fully charged. Using the quick charge cycle the battery can be recharged to 80% of its normal capacity in about 25 minutes.
