When you sign up for a car finance deal, you accept that the vehicle you are buying has been thoroughly tested to make sure it has no hidden defects. The seemingly increasing number of cars that have to be recalled by car manufacturers is, therefore, a source of concern for many motorists.
BMW, for example, has decided to recall 235,000 cars globally due to a problem with the electrical system that can cause cars to catch fire under certain circumstances. Apparently an error in the computer circuit board that controls the turbocharger cooling system can cause it to fail, which would, in turn, result in a smouldering water pump and even a fire in the carís engine compartment.
This affects nearly 30,000 cars in the UK alone.
In the United States BMW is recalling 89,000 Mini Coopers. These include 2007 to 2011 models of the Mini Cooper Clubman S, the Countryman S, the Mini Cooper S hatchbacks and the high performance John Cooper Works version of the Mini Cooper. Non-turbocharged Minis are not affected by the recall.
Owners will receive recall notices within the next couple of weeks. According to a Mini spokesperson the cars remained safe to drive. He said there was a "very low incidence" of the problem.
He added "We are not aware of any accidents or injuries connected with this. The important thing is that when people receive the letter, they simply go to their dealer and get a new water pump fitted if there is a problem."
