Car Loans customers who flout the London congestion charge will be hit with stiffer penalties in the future, under new proposals announced.
From December 10th, any finance customer who does not pay the £8 charge for driving in the city centre will be fined £120 - reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.
Transport for London (TfL), which runs the scheme, claims that by bringing the fine for avoiding the charge into line with other motoring offences, it will urge more credit customers to pay. Future car loans deals could be affected if convicted of flouting the laws.
Graeme Craig, director of congestion charging at TfL, said: "This move brings the penalty for not paying the congestion charge in line with the penalties issued by London boroughs for traffic and parking offences. At the same time, we are trying to make paying the daily charge as easy as possible."
London's congestion charge zone was introduced in 2003 and was the first large-scale scheme of its type in the world.
