Most British citizens feel that using a handheld mobile phone at the wheel could have negative repercussions on driving ability.

In a study by the Department for Transport, 90 per cent of people questioned said they felt that using a handheld mobile phone would badly affect drivers' skills behind the wheel, with car loan holders potentially among those motorists who could find themselves in trouble if caught breaking the law in this way.

The department has launched its findings to mark the anniversary of the raising of the punishment for being caught using a handheld mobile while driving to a £60 fine and three penalty points.

Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick stated: "One year on, I am delighted to see that the vast majority of people recognise the dangers of using a mobile when driving."

But he added: "However, too many people are still putting themselves and others in danger for the sake of a phone call."
