Car finance customers 'to shun bigger cars'

Motorists look set to turn away from bigger cars in large numbers as potential Car Finance customers look to save costs, a survey suggests.

Motorpoint said around two thirds of drivers are planning to choose a smaller vehicle on their next purchase.

Fuel prices, tax costs and depreciation are all thought to be behind motorists' reasons for wanting to abandon bigger cars.

Motorpoint managing director David Shelton said: "It's clear that the benefits of a smaller car are becoming more important."

The firm also said the industry has been reporting a surge in both new and used super MINI and compact MPV sales over the last year.

But Motorpoint also noted small car sales figures have not yet broken the 30 per cent market share barrier as some car finance customers stick to old habits.

Smaller city car models with better fuel efficiency could be snapped up in greater numbers following the survey results, with the FIAT 500 and VAUXHALL Agila among a host of new urban vehicles on the market.
