Car Finance customers who have been victims of a sudden trend in motor theft could welcome an innovative new scheme from FORD and a security firm.
The car maker has teamed up with Retainagroup to tackle criminal gangs which have been stealing catalytic converters from parked vehicles.
Drivers worried about damage to new vehicles recently bought with Car Loans could welcome the scheme, which involves marking the units with logos and unique identification numbers.
Police have previously faced difficulties in tackling the problem as there is usually no way of telling one converter from another.
DC Ian Elliott of the Metropolitan Police Stolen Vehicle Unit said: "It is public spirited initiatives like this, working in partnership with local crime reduction officers, which enable acquisitive crimes such as catalytic converter theft to be significantly reduced."
Earlier this month the Peterborough Evening Telegraph reported a converter was stolen overnight from a MITSUBISHI L200 following a series of thefts of units from other vehicles in the area.
