While over in the U.S. the Chevrolet Volt has become somewhat of a political punching bag, in the United Kingdom dealers expect that demand will far exceed supply – at least in the short term.
A report in Headlineauto.co.uk says that more than 2,500 prospective buyers have already contacted dealers in the UK – and the new model has not even arrived in the country yet.
Mark Terry, the UK boss of Chevrolet, says the auto manufacturer is doing its utmost to increase production levels in this country.
The Volt will become available in the UK this spring. It will be sold alongside its twin brother, the Vauxhall Ampera. The Volt will, however, have different pricing and specifications than its sibling. Terry said that buyers who “just won’t buy a Vauxhall” but who want the technology of the Volt will turn to Chevrolet.
Terry is convinced that the renowned American brand still carries a lot of weight with UK car buyers. When people downsize and they have to choose between an American brand and rivals such as the Korea Kia and Hyundai, they will choose Chevrolet, he believes.
He added "To put a Chevy on your drive is saying something. They want to go for a brand that says something."
He does realise, however, that there is still a lot to do to convince the UK market that the Volt is not just another American gas guzzler.
So if you are interested in an eco-conscious car it might be worthwhile postponing your next car loan until the Volt arrives in a few months’ time.
