Car Finance customers could be giving more thought to the rising cost of petrol when choosing cars, figures suggest.
Motorpoint said sales figures for the first three months of the year show car loan customers are going for smaller cars in an effort to avoid rising fuel prices.
The firm added statistics also showed motorists were continuing to buy cars in general but were avoiding diesel vehicles, which are particularly expensive to fill up.
Motorpoint managing director David Shelton said: "While the credit crunch has impacted on the economy, our sales figures show it hasn’t slowed down the number of people buying new and nearly new cars."
He added smaller cars, such as the FORD Fiesta and VAUXHALL Corsa, were currently more popular as sales of bigger cars like SUVs showed signs of slowing.
On Tuesday, Totally Motor reported the average price of a litre of unleaded petrol in the UK stood at 113.01p, with the average diesel price at 124.87p.
