Environmentally-conscious unsecured car loan customers may be pleased to hear that the level of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by new cars has fallen in recent months.

Clean Green Cars reports that new cars for sale now produce an average of 156.6 grams per kilometre of CO2, after falling by 4.5 per cent during the third quarter of this year.

The publication noted that if the rate of decrease continues at the current rate, average CO2 will be below 130g/km by 2012.

However, Jay Nagley, publisher of Clean Green Cars, said that the car industry has suggested that it is unlikely to meet the EU's 2012 target of 130g/km.

Yet the new figures suggest that this may not be the case, he commented.

"With buyers increasingly turning to fuel-efficient smaller models and the economic clouds getting ever darker, consumers may force the car industry to meet the target, rendering the argument with the EU irrelevant," Mr Nagley stated.

Car Finance customers have been able to find out the emission levels of new cars for sale with the introduction of new colour-coded labels.

Paul Everitt, chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, recently said that the new labels are a simple way of providing car buyers with information.
