Car Loans customers may be among the motorists who support reducing London's speed limit to 20 mph in residential areas, but mayoral candidates need to jump on the bandwagon too, it has been suggested.
According to motoring body Campaign for Better Transport, the suggestion made by London mayor Ken Livingstone needs the backing of other candidates who have pledged to increase cycling and walking in the capital.
Campaign for Better Transport's London campaigner Richard Bourn commented: "If the mayoral candidates are serious about promoting walking and cycling they must also sign up to lower speed limits."
Earlier this week, the mayor suggested that the "hidden toll" of pedestrians who die when struck by a car travelling at 40 mph could be cut from 90 per cent to one in 40 if the speed limit is cut to 20 mph in residential areas of the city.
