Mercedes to Expand S-Class

Jan 17 2012 Mercedes to Expand S-Class Image

Not many of us can afford a car loan large enough to buy an S-Class Mercedes, but for the lucky few who do qualify, we have good news: Mercedes plans to expand the range and a brand new four-seater convertible could soon become the flagship of this new selection.

The new range is expected to arrive next year and will consist of four new models, including the four-seater cabriolet.

Mercedes’ S-Class Programme Manager, Dr Uwe Ernstberger, told the motoring press at the Detroit Motor Show “The S-Class is the best luxury car in the world, and we have many surprises in terms of technology for the new model.”

Apart from the standard model, Mercedes will also release a long-wheelbase luxury version that will take the place of the current Maybach brand.  This car will also, at least spiritually, succeed the S600 Pullman.  Then there will be a two-door S-Class coupe that will carry the “S” badge rather than the current “CL” one.

The four-seater cabriolet will be the star of the range.  This model, with its vast folding roof, was inspired by the “Ocean Drive” concept car we saw way back in 2005 at the Los Angeles Motor Show.

In related news, the United Kingdom will at last get a Mercedes that can rival the Audi Q5 and the BMW X3.  This will come in the shape of the new GLK, which will be released within the next two to three years.

According to Dr Ernstberger cars such as the new E300 BlueTEC hybrid are the future of the company, since the technology is scalable.
