Motorists who already have motoring bills for fuel or Car Finance repayments may also have had to pay out for parking fines over the last few years.
Citing figures from the Traffic Penalty Tribunal, the Telegraph has found that the number of motorists who received parking penalties in the last six years has increased fivefold.
During 2006-07, a tenth of al UK drivers received a parking ticket. Meanwhile, the figure for 2000-01 was 794,851.
In addition, an increase is expected for 2007-08 as the number of councils gaining control over parking enforcement has risen by bout a fifth over the past year.
The publication claims that government figures have shown councils in England and Wales to be generating over £1 million from parking every year.
A number of changes to parking regulations were recently outlined, with motorists who illegally use disabled spaces now expected to pay £70 in recompense.
