Higher fuel prices could be set to hit the pockets of car loan holders in the UK later this year.
Despite fuel duty increases having made the UK the most expensive country for the tax in Europe, chancellor Alistair Darling is expected to announce a hike of 2p per litre in April this year.
In response, the motoring industry has teamed up to send a letter to Mr Darling requesting that he cancel the rise for the sake of motorists and fuel retailers, many of whom are "barely clearing costs", an expert has suggested.
According to director of the Retail Motor Industry's Petrol Retailers Association Ray Holloway, raising the fuel duty "would mean an immediate increase in prices for the consumer and would almost certainly push a number of forecourt businesses out of business".
Among the other bodies having expressed their opposition to the tax is the Freight Transport Association and the Federation of Small Businesses.
