If you live in the North East, signing up for a car loan on an electric car will soon make even more sense: the region is about to get its 300th electric vehicle recharging station.
Norman Baker, the Transport Minister, recently visited the North East to see for himself how this region is making rapid strides in establishing a recharging network for electric vehicles.
The 300th charging station will be an important milestone for the project, which is aptly called “Charge Your Car.” It was originally set up with funding to the amount of £7.8 million provided by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles.
The North East project has been running since 2010. The aim is to have a comprehensive network of at least 1,000 charging stations before the end of 2013. This region already has the largest charging network in the United Kingdom.
The network will eventually include a mixture of “intelligent” 3kW and 7kW charging points installed in public car parks and at businesses, as well as residential charging points.
Mr Baker was introduced to the region’s charging network at the Skills Academy for Sustainable Manufacturing and Innovation, where he also met the Charge Your Car management team. He was also given a chance to get first-hand experience of how a charging station works by quick charging a Nissan Leaf.
After the meeting he said “The government is fully committed to working with industry to create a world-leading charging network that really reflects the needs of its users.”
