Peugeot has announced its line-up of engines for the new super-mini, the Peugeot 208 – and one cannot help but marvel at what automakers are managing to achieve with the tried and trusted old internal combustion engine. If you thought that the only way you could sign up for an environmentally friendly auto loan is by buying an electric vehicle, the statistics below will make you think twice.
All the new 208 diesel engines will have emission levels of below 100g/km – something many of us would expect only from an EV. The new 1-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine will, in fact, also have emission levels of under 100g/km.
Four of the five diesel engines available for the 208 will be equipped with a micro hybrid stop-start system.
The junior among them is the 1.4-litre diesel producing 68bhp. Emission levels are very impressive at 87g/km and the fuel consumption of 83.1 miles per gallon will no doubt convince many car buyers to sign on the dotted line for a car finance package.
The 1.6-litre diesel produces 92bhp and the emission and fuel consumption figures are identical to that of the 1.4-litre version, when fitted with a six-speed automated manual or a five-speed manual gearbox. A 115bhp version of the engine is also available, which uses a six-speed gearbox. Emission levels for this version are 99g/km and fuel consumption is 74.3 mpg.
The 1-litre VTI petrol engine comes with a five-speed manual gearbox and promises 65.7 miles per gallon and emission levels of 99g/km.
