Although most of us cannot even dream of qualifying for car credit on a Porsche, it is still good to read about the latest offerings from this legendary company.
Porsche has indeed come a long way since Ferdinand Porsche first designed the Volkswagen Beetle in the 1930s. The company’s new entry model, the Boxster, has more power, is more efficient and weighs less than ever before.
The new Boxster also comes with fresh styling, but in true Porsche fashion the new model is an evolution rather than a revolution. It has a wider track, a longer wheelbase and bigger wheels than its predecessor (19-inch on the S model and 18-inch on the standard model).
The car has been given a more streamlined appearance by adding a more steeply raked windscreen and shorter overhangs at the front and back. It has the same fabric roof as the current model, but when lowered it now sits exposed behind the seats.
There have been major changes in the engine department. A smaller 2.7-litre engine replaces the current entry-level 2.9-litre flat six – yet it produces 10bhp more than the 251bhp of the current engine. The S model still uses a 3.4-litre flat-six, but this engine has been slightly modified and now produces 5bhp more. Both engines make use of stop-start technology.
The car comes standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, but for those who want better fuel economy and performance, an optional seven-speed PDK transmission is available. With this gearbox fuel consumption will be 15% better than with the six-speed version – 35.3mpg for the S and 36.7mpg for the standard Boxster.
