The British love of family cars is waning as super minis have become the most popular choice in a Used Car Search in the first half of 2007.

Research by Experian found that rising fuel prices saw that sales of models such as the RENAULT Clio and the NISSAN Micra were higher than vehicles such as the FORD Focus or VAUXHALL Astra during the first six months of the year.

Smaller vehicles are easier to secure Car Credit on, while guaranteed Car Finance is often offered on a wide range of super MINI vehicles. An increase in used Car Loans being approved saw sales of super minis reach 1.1 million to in the six months to June, 0.2 per cent higher than family cars.

Kirk Fletcher, managing director of Experian, said: "With growing levels of personal debt, higher running costs, increasing tax and pressures to reduce our impact on the environment, the benefits of a smaller car are becoming more apparent to car buyers. It is not surprising that super mini sales have topped the popularity list in the used car world."

As of November 21st, the average price for a litre of unleaded petrol in the UK was £1.02.
