Toyota has reason to celebrate: its Lexus division has become the mainstream auto manufacturer in the UK showing the largest growth in 2011 – 33.3% to be exact.
This remarkable success during a year in which new car sales dropped by more than 4% can largely be ascribed to the company’s new “compact premium hybrid” model, the CT200h. This model alone sold more than 4,200 units during 2011. Lexus recorded total sales of 8,260 units last year, which of course means that the hybrid model accounted for more than 50% of the carmaker’s sales in 2011.
Despite being a luxury car, the hybrid Lexus, which is based on the Prius, boasts fuel economy of 68.9 miles per gallon and emission levels of 94g/km – good enough to drive any owner of a gas guzzler to sign up for a new car loan on a CT200h.
The CT200h’s advertising campaign was supported by famous pop star Kylie, making its “quiet revolution” a nearly guaranteed success. Lexus reports that two out of every three of these cars were sold to owners who were previously driving other brands.
A Director at Lexus UK, Richard Balshaw, said “2011 was a great year for Lexus in the UK. CT 200h has made Lexus accessible to more customers. This result is all the more remarkable considering the significant supply disruption we experienced through the year as a result of the Japanese tsunami.”
Balshaw is confident that 2012 will be another good year for Lexus.
