A survey says two thirds of possible new car buyers will go for a greener option over the next year.
The What Car? data said 66 per cent of people looking for a new car, and possibly a car loan, will go for a more environmentally-friendly vehicle.
Figures also revealed 47 per cent of people wanted a greener car to save cash and just 19 per cent wanted one purely because of environmental issues.
What Car? group editor Steve Fowler said: "The government will be pleased with this news coming so soon after Alistair Darling's budget."
He also noted the importance of money to purchasers in comparison to green issues could be caused by recent financial pressures.
What Car? is planning to showcase the latest environmental cars and technology at the British International Motor Show in July, which could be of interest to people thinking of getting a new car through Car Finance.
Average oil prices have now hit more than $115 (£57.58) a barrel in a development that could further push up the price of fuel.
Some drivers could be tempted to get a new more efficient car by the prices, possibly opting for a new car loan.
