Car loan customers heading off on long summer motoring holidays could be surprised by new figures from the RAC Foundation on drivers' tyre knowledge.

Around 90 per cent of motorists link tyre age and road safety but up to three million don't make the connection, according to new research conducted for the foundation.

In an effort to educate drivers, the group has devised an eight-week tyre safety campaign offering free inspections.

The RAC Foundation said: "Experts agree older tyres are at higher risk of fatigue, deterioration and potential failure, which is why we are encouraging motorists to get them checked thoroughly before setting off on summer holidays."

Car loan customers could be interested in the free checks, organised by the RAC at 2,700 NTDA member centres across the country and listed on www.ntda.co.uk.

Last month the RAC Foundation argued reform of road pricing and investment should plough ahead in spite of concerns about carbon emissions, fuel prices and investment costs.
