Up! Named Car of the Year

It may not even be on the road in the United Kingdom yet, but the Volkswagen Up! has nonetheless taken out the awards for Best City Car and Car of the Year 2012 at the What Car? Awards.

The motor industry's annual "Oscars" proved to be a very successful night for Volkswagen. The ceremony, which was held at London's Grosvenor Square, saw the Golf voted top in the Small Family Car category for the fourth year in a row, and its sixth time in total, while Volkswagen also took home the much-coveted Safety Award.

"The Volkswagen Up! sets new standards for a car at £10, 000," says Chris Hallett, the editor in chief of What Car? "It's a city car that can seat four adults, while offering new levels of refinement, quality and maturity at this price; none of its rivals feel quite so grown-up. Buyers will be looking for even more for their money than ever in 2012, so the Up! is a worthy winner of the What Car? Car of the Year."

Chris Craft, the director of Volkswagen UK, says that the company is delighted with the result of the awards. He notes that the magazine is one of the most crucial and thorough sources of information about new cars for customers in the United Kingdom, and that the accolade of winning Car of the Year is the best introduction to the UK market that could have been achieved for the Up! The first models are set to arrive in showrooms in March, and they will be available for rental via contract hire schemes.
