Car buyers have been advised not to be "taken in" by the appearance of a used car but to be wary of whether the vehicle is actually an insurance write-off.

When conducting a Used Car Search, car buyers may be tempted by "shiny paintwork and a low prices", Daniel Burgess, automotive director at HPI, said.

However, Mr Burgess warned that some vehicles can be "hiding a multitude of faults" that have never been repaired.

The expert explained that a recent report by the UK Car Body Repair Market showed write-offs now account for a quarter of all insurance claims.

"An HPI Check will spot one of these cars enabling the car buyer to ensure they are getting the vehicle for the right price, or walking away from an unsafe vehicle," he stated.

HPI's used car valuations expert Martin Keighley recently urged motorists considering buying a new car to think about how its value may depreciate before they commit to a purchase.
