Car buyers who want to sign up for auto finance on a hybrid electric vehicle are slowly getting a widening array of choices.
The next Volvo to be released will, for example, also be a plug-in hybrid called the XC60. The car is currently in the concept stage and will make its first appearance at the Detroit Motor Show early in January 2012. The move forms part of Volvo’s plans to increase the use of low emission technology in the manufacture of its vehicles.
The XC60 will use Volvo’s familiar “three cars in one” strategy to offer a combination of powerful performance and flawless environmental credentials.
Similar to the V60 plug-in hybrid, which will debut in the UK market during November 2012, the XC60 plug-in will feature three different driving modes: Power, Hybrid and Pure. In Power mode the car combines the 70bhp electric motor with a 280bhp petrol engine for maximum performance. In Pure mode it uses only the electric motor – which has a range of about 35 miles.
In the Chinese and U.S. markets the concept car will be fitted with a petrol engine, unlike its cousin, the V60 plug-in, which is driven by a diesel engine.
The CEO and President of Volvo, Stefan Jacoby, said “This world-class gasoline plug-in hybrid technology, featuring a state-of-the-art four-cylinder engine from our upcoming Volvo Environmental Architecture engine family, will reach our American showrooms in a couple of years.”
The car will be fitted with a lithium-ion battery pack that can be recharged at a 110V power outlet in about 7.5 hours. With a 220v power supply the process will take about 3.5 hours.
