More people may have invested in a car or van loan in January as figures have shown that vehicle trading at auctions exceeded expectations.
British Car Auctions (BCA) has said that over the month, sales volumes rose and the average price of vehicles sold was higher than in January 2007.
In addition, the firm sold almost £78 million worth of cars in the fourth week of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007.
However, it has said that the market is likely to soften after the forthcoming plate change in March.
BCA's communications director Tony Gannon commented: "January is traditionally an active month in the trade and coming off a period at the end of 2007 when the market was particularly slow, the leap into the new year has been welcome.
"However, Easter comes early this year and that often proves to be a watershed in demand."
Earlier in the year the firm forecast a revival in demand for 1980s vehicles with the lunch of new BBC programme Ashes to Ashes, which features an AUDI Quattro.
