Production of cars in January rose by almost a fifth in the UK, data has shown.

Findings by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has shown that production was up 19.7 per cent last month, marking the seventh month of double-digit growth.

It was also the highest production total for January since 2002.

"This good news is hot-on-the-heels of Honda's announcement of a further £80 million investment in its Swindon plant," commented SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt.

The plant has shown a 25 per cent increase in production volume during the past 18 months.

Meanwhile, those looking to take out a van loan to buy a new commercial vehicle may also have a wider range of models to choose from, as production of these motors reached their highest point since 1990.

Mr Everitt added: "Environmental issues remain a priority and Leyland Trucks factory's recent 'Zero waste to Landfill' achievement is an example of sustainable production in action."
