Car credit customers helping motor industry to go green?
Mar 12 2009Eco-conscious Car Credit customers may have helped the motor industry cut its CO2 emissions last year by buying greener models.
According to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), emissions from vehicles fell by its fastest rate on record last year, with the average car now producing 158 grams of CO2 per kilometre.
But chief executive of the SMMT Paul Everitt has said that more needs to be done if the industry is to meet strict new targets on CO2 output.
"The motor industry has made enormous progress in its work to cut the environmental impact of its products but more must be done if the tough targets set by European legislation are to be met," he commented.
Mr Everitt suggested that a car scrappage scheme be introduced in the UK, which could help generate demand for vehicles among car credit customers while also removing old cars with high emissions from the streets.
Such a measure has also received the backing of the Retail Motor Industry Federation, which has said that demand for 250,000 new models could be stimulated by such a move.
