Car industry to benefit from electric car plans
Apr 23 2009The government's efforts to deliver an environmentally-friendly Budget and offer incentives for the development of electric cars will help boost the car industry, it has been claimed.
The Campaign for Better Transport has suggested the investment from the government in developing the electric car market will boost manufacturers and increase demand for electric cars, potentially creating a major new market.
Such a development could also see a considerable jump in the number of eco-friendly electric vehicles filtering through into the used car market as they become more prevalent.
Speaking after the plans were revealed, Richard George, roads and climate campaigner for the Campaign for Better Transport, said: "This was a thinly-veiled framework to give money to the car industry - to try and kick-start people buying cars again."
Business secretary Lord Mandelson and transport secretary Geoff Hoon recently launched an initiative to help put electric cars into the reach of ordinary motorists by providing help worth £2,000 to £5,000 towards buying the first electric and plug in hybrid cars.
The government said it expected to see these vehicles in showrooms from 2011 onwards.
