Secured Car Loans customers could see the number of accidents on the roads begin to fall after tougher measures to deal with uninsured drivers were announced.
Road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick announced that those taking to the roads without insurance will have "nowhere to hide" following the introduction of a new system to help protect law-abiding motorists.
Owners of new and used cars will no longer be able to own a car without taking out cover on the vehicle, even if they do not plan to drive it.
Car loans customers who fail to insure their vehicle could then face fines and might even see their cars destroyed.
Mr Fitzpatrick said: "The selfish minority of drivers who refuse to insure their cars push up premiums for other motorists and kill or injure thousands of people each year."
By giving police increased power to deal with offenders, the government hoped to reduce the number of uninsured drivers putting the lives of others at risk, he added.
The Association of British Insurers has since offered its support for the announcement, which it said would help "drive the menace of uninsured driving from our roads".
