New and used car owners are being warned to steer clear of "unscrupulous garages" to avoid being overcharged for vehicle repairs.
According to Warranty Direct, cases of unrelated or unnecessary repairs are on the rise across the country.
An increasing number of motorists are being duped by garages who have taken to inflating repair bills and recommending work that does not need carrying out.
Warranty Direct managing director Duncan McClure Fisher said he hoped the organisation's decision to reveal the extent of the problem would help put an end to needless charges for new and used car drivers.
"We are releasing our findings not only to protect the motorist but also to allow some unscrupulous garages to get their houses back in order," he commented.
In one case highlighted by Warranty Direct's analysis, a customer received a bill that came to 2,200 per cent more than the actual repairs necessary.
The findings come after former Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson, speaking on behalf of Kitemark, urged unsecured Car Loans customer to make sure the dealer they are buying from is part of a registered motoring federation before parting with their money.
