The finance you need The car you want

The motor industry should attempt to recycle more old vehicles if it is to become sustainable, a report has concluded.

By recycling more cars instead of sending them to scrap, the industry can become greener and more able to pass benefits on to Car Loans customers, the study by Ox FORD Brookes University found.

Car Finance customers may be interested to know that currently 75 per cent of a vehicle is recycled but, under European Union (EU) directives, by 2015 that figure will be 95 per cent. Those undertaking a Used Car Search may find that 20 per cent of vehicles in the used car market could be scrapped or recycled in their present condition.

Professor Allan Hutchinson, author of the report, said: "How to dispose of vehicles more effectively may not be the most glamorous part of the motor industry, but it may well ultimately be the most important for a sustainable one."

The EU plans to make all cars emit less than 120 g/km of carbon dioxide by 2012.
