The majority of British drivers have no idea how much CO2 their cars emit, according to a new survey carried out on behalf of the Environmental Transport Association (ETA).
The research shows that 65 per cent of car owners in the UK do not know how polluting their vehicles are despite continued efforts by the government to encourage take-up of low emission cars by offering financial incentives.
Drivers in the capital are the least well informed when it comes to the environmental credentials of their car, with 68 per cent unaware of the vehicle's emissions levels. This compares to 56 per cent of motorists in Scotland.
"The debate about emissions and climate change moves on, but the results of our survey show it may be leaving people behind," said ETA director Andrew Davis.
The government has lowered road tax charges for owners of low emission cars, while those driving zero emission vehicles are now exempt. This is good news for environmentally-aware car loan customers looking to save money on their motoring bills.
There are also plans to raise the congestion charge in central London to £25 per day for so called 'gas-guzzlers' in a bid to discourage motorists from choosing such cars.
