All new cars manufactured in the European Union will need to include electronic stability program (ESP) as mandatory in future.
The European parliament has ruled that the technology, which is designed to support motorists in critical driving situations and reduce the risk of a fatal accident, must be incorporated on all new vehicles entering the European market from November 2011.
"ESP can prevent up to 80 per cent of all skid-related accidents," explained Werner Struth, president of the chassis systems control division at Bosch, which manufactures the technology.
He added: "After the SEAT belt, the system is therefore the most important safety technology in the car."
The move will mean more vehicles coming into the used car market in future will have the technology fitted as standard, making used cars even safer.
According to recent figures from the British Car Auctions organisation, demand for used cars has continued to grow over recent months, as more people look to purchase a used car during the credit crunch rather than splash out on a new model.
