The CO2 emission rates of new cars for sale are dramatically improving, according to new industry statistics.

Car loan customers thinking of buying a more environmentally-friendly vehicle could be interested in the figures, released by Clean Green Cars and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The CO2 rates for new models are down 3.18 per cent for the first six months of this year, and down 3.64 per cent during the last three months.

SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said: "The reductions are significant and sustained and will increase as more fuel-efficient cars come to market."

The latest cars now produce 159.7 CO2g/km, compared to a rate of 188.4 CO2g/km back in 1998.

Jay Nagley of Clean Green cars said most people were switching to greener cars to offset the impact of rising fuel prices, rather than to save the environment.
