The finance you need The car you want

As many as five million motorists - including Car Finance customers - may be driving around the UK with under-inflated tyres, new research has suggested.

According to a study by Kwik-Fit, 39 per cent of tyre gauges used by motorists as petrol stations are damaged, leading to unreliable readings.

Driving a car with deflated tyres can result in a lack of control over the vehicle or a tyre blowout, leading to an increased risk of an accident. Future Car Loans or Car Credit deals may be affected as a result.

David White, customer services director at Kwik-Fit, said: "You might well be forgiven for expecting the gauge on your local garage forecourt to be accurate and in working condition, but seemingly this is not the case."

Research released last month by Kwik-Fi revealed that one in six drivers could be left with a flat battery this winter due to in-car entertainment systems, iPods and satellite navigation devices.
